The Practice of Taking Refuge

We take refuge in the lineage
Of scoundrels, misfits, and noble ones;
Of those whose only purpose
Is to manifest Buddha-wisdom;
By any means necessary.

We arise today
Through the strength of Dharma
Light of sun, radiance of moon,
Splendor of fire, speed of lightening,
Swiftness of wind
Depth of sea, stability of earth,
And firmness of rock.

We commit ourselves to An Sith (ahn-shee)
We commit ourselves to the dispelling of
An nela dubh (ahn’nella’dov)
We commit ourselves to the development of
An da shealladh (ahn’daa’haa-loo)
As we become Anam Caras (ahn’nam kar’rahs)
To those in need,
May we daily reclaim the chiefdoms
Of us, the children of mist;
And as One, rise up and greet
The Great Eastern Sun

Refuge Prayer written by Venerable Thom Kilts

An Sith (ahn-shee): A state of peace and equanimity.
An nela dubh (ahn’nella’dov): A state of dark clouds of obscuration.
An da Shealladh (ahn’daa’ haa-loo): Second Attention, depth of perception ability.
Anam caras (ahn’nam’kar’rahs):  Spiritual friend, counselors, guides.

CELTIC BUDDHIST VAJRASATTVA CHANT by Thom Kilts

AH

Arising from the sun is the God, Bel
Called upon for the distinct purpose
to purify our transgressions, and cleanse
our obscurations along the path.

For the benefit of devout and serious practitioners;
Bel manifests above the crown of my head
and takes form as a Buddha, Vajrasattva

HUM

Holding vajra and bell and embracing a consort,
I ask you for refuge and to cleanse my obscurations
as I confess any and all transgressions.
Encircling the emanation of you above my head,
is the magnificent mantra, that when recited
stirs the nectar of the mind of enlightenment.
Falling on me as the most refreshing and cleansing rain;
Through it may all polluted actions and afflictions
which cause all suffering, sickness, spirits, sins,
obstructions, faults, infractions and defilements
of myself and all beings in the three realms
be made completely clean. (recite the mantra as many times as possible):

OM
VAJRA-SATTVA SAMAYA….MANU PA-LA-YA
VAJRA SATTVA TE-NO-PA…TIS-TA-DRI-DO ME BHA-WA
SUTO KHYO ME BHA-WA
SUPO KHYO ME BHA WA
ANU RAK-TO ME BHA-WA
SARWA SIDDHI ME PRA-YAT-SHA
SARWA KARMA SUT-SA-ME
TSIT-STAN SHRI-YA KU-RU HUNG
HA-HA-HA-HA-HO….BHA-GHA-WAN
SARWA TA-THA-GA-TA
VAJRA MA-ME MUN-TSA
VAJ-RI BHA-WA
MAHA SA-MAYA SATT-VA
AH

As you dissolve back into light,
I, become Vajrasattva myself, appearing and empty
like an image in a mirror.
As the God Bel, I am embraced by the light of sun
and comforted by the warmth of fire.

May the undying, brilliant and constant emanation of the sun
continue to serve as a reminder to me;
To honor my pledges, my gurus, see all reality as teachings,
and hold true to my commitments
to Sangha and my vows.

OM AH HUM (repeat three times)
